Celebrating 30 Years

My husband had a very special birthday. He turned 30 years old. I've known him since he was 27, but it was also the first of his birthdays we've spent in person so I wanted to make his day more special than it usually would have been. So, I had to document many parts of his birthday.

While he was sleeping on Saturday morning, I wanted to prank him, but I wanted to do something that was more or less a clean prank - nothing that would ruin his day. In order to do so I had to hide the supplies for this prank  (as well as his birthday gift) in our storage room.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 
So I went outside and placed wet cotton balls on his car. 

I made him his favorite food - cheese fries made from sliced potatoes. 

 I baked a chocolate cake from scratch and added sprinkles because sprinkles make everything taste better! If the cake didn't taste great then, hey at least the cake had sprinkles! And because 30 lit candles already seems like a lot, it may be the last time he gets candles on his cake.

We had a birthday celebration at his parents' house which his parents have for every family member. It's usually very laid back with ice cream cake and his dad makes a quiz about the person with the birthday so everyone has to answer according to their preferences. For instance, the theme of Arild's quiz was which gift would he rather have and the answers to choose from was something like, a red woolen sweater or black leather pants. Then because my husband is such an outgoing partier (sarcasm inserted here), we ended the night with a couple of games of bowling. :-)

Arild opened his presents from everyone and on top of the present I bought him, I made him something I found on Pinterest. A friend of mine when I told her the idea, she thought it was a great idea and especially something to look back on if we ever get into a fight and need some cheering up.
365 Reasons Why I Love You
He's supposed to read one reason a day every day for a year. I thought a good time to give him this would be the day he turned 30. I just filled up the reasons with things like, I love you for always remembering to put a new roll of toilet paper in the holder when I forget to and I love your smiling dimples or I love you sharing half the housework. 

So that was his birthday and I look forward to spending many more with him!

I've finally begun reading a book that has been in my reading list for a few years now; Norwegian By Night by Derek B. Miller. The author is actually an American man from Boston living in Oslo. Although it's a thriller, the expatriation of the main character is relatable. Sheldon Horowitz, a Marine, relocates to Oslo with his granddaughter, an American married to a Norwegian man. One particular quote, or paragraph rather, stood out to me, "Lars, being Lars, was overjoyed and encouraging and optimistic about her ability to adapt and join the pod. The Dyne

Separate dyne!  On beds a dyne (duvet) is used and you purchase covers in many prints and different types of fabrics. These are a pain in the butt to put over the duvet, but we manage. Many people have a duvet for summer months and a duvet for winter months. Oh, and the most common thing is for each person to have their own duvet. Moving to Norway as a newlywed, I wanted to have one duvet that we shared on our bed thinking it would be extra cozy and we'd cuddle more. Newlyweds are hilariously idealistic though! This lasted only a few months before we surrendered with white flags in the war zone that was our sleeping quarters. Turns out, I'm quite territorial over the duvet. I hear a lot of women are like this. I freeze easier than my husband so I was often less comfortable than I wanted to be and he's a night owl who goes to bed later than I do which means every time he lifted the duvet, a gush of cold air would follow him waking me. Movie Title Translations

Watching TV earlier, I noticed some movies are given different titles translated into Norwegian. I believe the movie being advertised on TV was Couples Retreat, but being translated into something different it was something like Trøbbel i paradiset. Translated it would be Trouble in the Paradise - you can see the similarities in the language in that title. All original English speaking movies are still spoken in English with no voice overs, but they are shown in Norwegian subtitles. There is an exception to this with children's movies and TV programs which do have Norwegian voice overs. I asked Arild why some movie titles are in English, some are translated, and some are translated into names completely different. He said he really didn't know and thought of a coffee table book he has which has a list of the most off-titled movie translations.
