Meeting a Reader

This past weekend, I met one of my blog readers who I have been talking to via email for a couple of months. She recently moved to a nearby city for a job and I was happy to reach out and meet her at a cafe for some conversation on adjusting to life in Norway and general expatriation. I've spoken to many people via email and recently I've been very busy and haven't had much time to get back to every comment on my blog or email, but I promise I will soon!

Anyways, regardless of the differences of our reason for coming to Norway, we of course had a relaxed, easy and comfortable time discussing what it's like to be a foreigner in Norway, the "weird" things about Norwegian culture, and bits and pieces of what our home country is like as well as some personal stories.

It was a kind of surreal experience to meet a reader. Just to go from one day last year deciding to start up a blog about my personal experience with moving to Norway and going from talking to other expatriates and now meeting one! She and I did decide we should meet up again sometime and still stay in touch via email.

I love meeting my readers, other expats yes but also native Norwegians that are fascinated by the observations of "outsiders".

But if you think that feels strange, wait until you start getting recognised..! "Hey aren't you that person who writes that blog?"

THAT feels weird, and it really does happen!

I actually think I know your reader, from previous posts. We may be colleagues. Strange. Good luck to her! And you!

We two live in the same city, that's why I read your blog. I find your posts an amusing way to look at the Norwegian community.

However, I have been an expat myself, I lived in France for a year. I understand the need for a social network and a new foundation. And, actually, a blog is recommended in teaching social classes for foreigners living abroad. I think you do a good work, there.

We are not in the same age, so I can't provide any advice on how to socialise in Norway. However, sports, music and organised outdoors activities the most easiest ways to meet Norwegians at their "ground level", so to say. Although the American-English can be challenging.

Actually, I know of an American living in Porsgrunn. He's my colleague. Wisconsin, if I remember correctly. So there are a few.

I've finally begun reading a book that has been in my reading list for a few years now; Norwegian By Night by Derek B. Miller. The author is actually an American man from Boston living in Oslo. Although it's a thriller, the expatriation of the main character is relatable. Sheldon Horowitz, a Marine, relocates to Oslo with his granddaughter, an American married to a Norwegian man. One particular quote, or paragraph rather, stood out to me, "Lars, being Lars, was overjoyed and encouraging and optimistic about her ability to adapt and join the pod. The Dyne

Separate dyne!  On beds a dyne (duvet) is used and you purchase covers in many prints and different types of fabrics. These are a pain in the butt to put over the duvet, but we manage. Many people have a duvet for summer months and a duvet for winter months. Oh, and the most common thing is for each person to have their own duvet. Moving to Norway as a newlywed, I wanted to have one duvet that we shared on our bed thinking it would be extra cozy and we'd cuddle more. Newlyweds are hilariously idealistic though! This lasted only a few months before we surrendered with white flags in the war zone that was our sleeping quarters. Turns out, I'm quite territorial over the duvet. I hear a lot of women are like this. I freeze easier than my husband so I was often less comfortable than I wanted to be and he's a night owl who goes to bed later than I do which means every time he lifted the duvet, a gush of cold air would follow him waking me. Movie Title Translations

Watching TV earlier, I noticed some movies are given different titles translated into Norwegian. I believe the movie being advertised on TV was Couples Retreat, but being translated into something different it was something like Trøbbel i paradiset. Translated it would be Trouble in the Paradise - you can see the similarities in the language in that title. All original English speaking movies are still spoken in English with no voice overs, but they are shown in Norwegian subtitles. There is an exception to this with children's movies and TV programs which do have Norwegian voice overs. I asked Arild why some movie titles are in English, some are translated, and some are translated into names completely different. He said he really didn't know and thought of a coffee table book he has which has a list of the most off-titled movie translations.
